Cat 5 Road Race Report

submitted by Jeff Malnick

After an hour and forty five minute delay for the start a very large field of cat 5 road race, riders made their way through Laguna and Barloy Canyon for a solid day's effort. The first two laps were very uneventful, then there was a two man break on the climb up Henneken. The break stuck leaving the rest of the pack to fight for third place. Greg, Jeff, and Chris were doing very well until Jeff lost count of the lap they were on and made a gigantic pull with Greg in tow. Jeff's great expectations turned into immediate resentment as he was flagged back up Henneken for another (this time the last) lap. Greg got into a ten or so man break at the top of the climb and Jeff made pace about thirty seconds back, bridging the gap at the Parker Flats Cut Off. Chris had a really strong pull out front, which just happened to coincide with Joe and Eric snapping photos out on the course. Jeff was also guilty of showboating in the same coincidental spot. On the final decent Jeff stayed behind Greg's wheel and together they broke the pack up about half way to the top. At the one kilometer mark they had about thirty seconds on the main pack with two riders holding with them. At the 200 meter mark Greg took off in a massive effort followed in close pursuit by Jeff, and cheered on by the best support team that Canadian and Australian blood has to offer (thank you Kerry and Rowan). Greg placed third, Jeff fourth, and Brownie 15th which was an awesome effort because he isn't close to top form yet. The only disappointment was waiting in the freezing cold windy night for our bloody awards ceremony to be done – however the case of Cliff Bars made this worth it too. Post script: Jeff was stoked to finish a race with his (yes his very own) bicycle in tact.
