Local Rides

Sunday Morning Ride

The Sunday ride meets at the Old Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey, and usually leaves by 7:30. The ride route is variable, and may spontaneously turn into a mountain bike ride when the weather turns wet. Some of our common Sunday ride routes are listed below:

Surf City Ride: This ride goes around to the other side of the Monterey Bay via the Monterey Bike Path, Highway 1 through Moss Landing, and then through a few coastal back roads. We ultimately end up at Surf City Coffee in Aptos for a short coffee break, and then head back via the same route. The ride distance ends up being about 80 miles of mostly flat roads.
San Benancio Loop: This ride heads out Highway 68 and then turns right at San Benancio Road. After a climbing up San Benancio, there's a steady descent down Corral De Tierra Road, then up Toro Road to the top of Laureless Grade Road. After a fast descent back down to Highway 68, the ride heads back to Monterey and usually ends at East Village Coffee. Ride distance is about 40 hilly miles.
Mountain Bike Ride: This ride heads out to Fort Ord for a 3-4 hour bike ride which ends up at West End Coffee in Sand City. I'd like to describe the route in detail, but we usually have no idea where we're going until we get there.

Tuesday Night Circuit Race (Spring and Summer)

The Tuesday Night Circuit Race is actually a training ride which does multiple loops in Fort Ord.  It's main challenges are rolling power-hills and frequent headwinds.  There's a warm-up ride that starts from Fisherman's Wharf at 5PM, or you could meet at the start area in Fort Ord at 6PM (corner of Normandy Road and Parker Flats Cut-off).

Tuesday Night Ride (Winter)

This ride leaves from Winning Wheels Bike Store in Pacific Grove at 5PM. Lights are required for this ride. The route will head through Pacific Grove and Pebble Beach. We endeavor to keep the pace civilized, as we'll finish this ride in utter darkness. The route ends up being about 30 miles long with a few moderate hills.

Saturday Morning Ride

This is the biggest ride in the Monterey Area. The ride starts from the Portola Hotel & Spa in Monterey at 7:15 AM. After a warm-up ride through Pacific Grove, there's a short regroup at Spanish Bay before the real ride begins. This is a fast-paced ride through Pebble Beach, and then back through Pacific Grove. Ride distance is over 40 miles with a few moderate hills. The ride ends up at East Village Coffee for some after ride socializing. Please be courteous to cars and residents and obey all traffic laws.

Please Note: Monterey Bay Racing Team is not responsible for anyone that shows up on these rides. If you want to ride, you should have a reliable bike in good working condition. Please ride with common sense, and obey all traffic laws. All riders are expected to be skilled at riding in groups and pacelines.
